August 2004 Goose Droppings

Pool Party It was a beautiful day out on the peninsula. A high partial overcast cut the heat of the days leading up to the party. The volleyball was a laid back affair this year, with many breaks for liquid refreshment. It’s just not the same exercise in military precision that it was when that old Prussian drill sergeant, Valter Lorz, vas barking out, “drei zerving acht! Vere are you goink Bruce? You have not been excused!” Doc had to turn the water back on in the pool after Murk and Duncan Koellmel cherry-bombed and cannonballed half of it out. The rugrats seemed to have lots of fun and so did the kids. Hugh and Morag Duncan were over which was good to see. I think Hugh and his friend said they were going to invade some Central American country and steal all their lead-zinc ore. Doc took me up into Blair Witch country to check out the new horseshoe pitch. It’s ? size and quite picturesque but it needs some bar tables to hold your beverages. It’s bad enough bending over to pick up the horseshoes without having to worry about where you left your beer. The BBQ Cru worked their miracles for the multitudes and many, many thanks go out to Phil and Mairi for laying their little corner of paradise open to the hordes …again.

SOBs 10-a-side Tournament, July 31 Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun. Only in this case the Twilighter’s English contingent had the great good sense to stay out of the sun, it was torrid. Garry, Frodo, Jamie, Tyler and Pee Wee joined with elements of the 4th Armored Division… I mean Legends and Bill Dunn was drafted by the East Side Gentlemen to lend a certain amount of class to what was promising to be a dreary affair; but hot, let’s not forget hot. I think a lot of the 50+ and 60+ lads cast our minds back to Portland in ’98 when it was 98 and said to ourselves, “Ahh…..naahh!”. The Legendary Twits acquitted themselves famously, carving the opposition up like the Iron Chef would dismantle a tenderloin. Towards the end of the day the Doc appeared to the warriors in a silver aura, like some semi-handsome male Valkyrie to take them to the Valhalla at the end of North Bluff Road, to beer them and to bathe them in the soothing waters of the sacred pool. Garry said it was 2 or 3 times better than the Nestea Plunge.

Speaking of Pee Wee, both Turner and Gord Sanderson tell me that it wasn’t them that told me the next story and I believe them but if not them then who? It seems Mr. Read was out scouting one of the local drinking establishments intent on meeting a lady for some stimulating conversation. P.W. cranks his line up and all of a sudden the girl cracks back, “Wait a minute Buster. I don’t swing that way. I’m a Lesbian!” Pee Wee says, “ Oh yeah?…so how are things in Beirut?”

"Practice" August 18 The Guns of August were out. Frank Marisco was down from Nelson and Wayne O’Hara was up from Denver and a cast of thousands. Later while replenishing our liquid levels, newbie James Copeland pokes me and asks, pointing at John Barton, “Is that Pee Wee’s father?”… Heh, Heh, Heh (Sound of editor giggling) I think I better bring James a pair of earplugs for the next practice. Turk says dues must be in by the 1st home game in October. That’s $125 and Turk is not to be trifled with.

Powell River, September 11 Why does that date ring a bell? Anyway, Jamie London and Lonnie Fribance are planning on making available accommodations for those who are going up on Friday (stag only I think) but see Jamie or Lonnie on Wednesday or phone Jamie at 604-926-2991 or Lonnie at 604-939-5118. If you get up early enough you might get in some golf. Jamie said he would come out to the highway to intercept the ferry traffic and lead you in to Pender Harbour. For those of you going directly into Powell River or staying over on Saturday night, Turk’s reserved a block of rooms at the Powell River Town Center Hotel (the old Coast). Phone number is 1-604-485-3000. Price is $79 for 2. $10.00 for each additional person. Come on up …you WILL have a lot of fun!

Masters Games, Edmonton, July 21-August 5, 2005 Dave Milne is assembling an over-60 squad and George Cook’s looking after the over-45’s.

PNW Tournament 2005 Ian “Frodo” Trevor says it’s going to be held on May 6, 7 & 8 in expectation that we can attract some teams, on their way to San Diego’s Golden Oldies, in for tea and cookies and some rugby.

George Cook was back east recently coaching/managing a girls’ rugby team and made the acquaintance of some people in the Hamilton/Niagara region so we’d like to extend an invitation to those elderly gentlemen of rugby to the PNW Tournament next May. Check out their website at www.hamiltonrugby.com. It’s got links to the Niagara people too.
